Youth And Teen Program


Creative Dance

Tots & Folks (18 mos - 3yrs) - 12 week sessions

This program is specifically designed for children and the folks who accompany them to class. Highly interactive, all students will experience the joy of movement through the exploration of sound, props, music and story telling, stimulating and nurturing their creativity.

Creative Dance (3-5 yrs)

Developed especially for the younger child, this program is designed to nurture, develop, and encourage inner creativity and individual expression in a spontaneous and joyful atmosphere. These classes promote positive social interaction with peers, freedom of movement, coordination, and natural movement vocabulary. They teach, guide, and encourage creative thinking, creative movement, and creative expression though a series of playful exercises, inspirational activities, and fun games.

Ballet

This season the school is introducing a New Ballet Program, that is non- syllabus. As this programming is new to the studio, come grow with us and enjoy smaller classes that will give careful attention to the individual needs and development of the younger dancer, while encouraging creative thinking, artistic expression, self-motivation, and musicality.

Modern/Contemporary

A rich, diverse, and unique movement form that supports individual expression while developing a solid technical base. Classes focus on alignment, kinetic awareness and placement of the body, encouraging freedom of movement, coordination, and inner creativity. Skills of improvisation, partnering work, and creative process are developed in these classes. These liberating classes will let your joyful dancer shine!

Hip Hop/ Jazz

Influenced by the techniques of Luigi and Horton, students will explore a variety of styles while developing a solid technical base. Everything from the quick, sharp, isolated movements of traditional jazz to modern street dance and hip hop culture, these highly energetic classes allow students to explore movement, rhythm and self-expression through fast-paced choreography. Perfect for increasing dancers’ ability to pick up choreography, or for those looking for a fun cardiovascular workout.

Professional Program


This programme is designed for the serious student, age 12 and up. Careful attention is given to develop dancers who are self-directed, versatile, open-minded, physically confident, and who have a solid understanding of functional anatomy and creative expression.
Individual Programming is created for each student; classes include modern technique, contemporary ballet, improvisation, repertoire, and conditioning. All Professional Students perform with one of our resident companies.

Modern/Contemporary

Dancers will develop a solid technical base to support individual expression. Classes focus on healthy body imagery and alignment while encouraging freedom of movement, authenticity, and qualitative movement choices. All classes include release work, core conditioning and technique. Movement honed in these classes. All Pre-Professional Dancers also perform with one of our resident companies.

Contemporary Ballet

These classes focus on training dancers for today’s professional standards, ballet for the 21 Century. Dancers are encouraged to maintain a strong, clean, classical ballet technique while enriching and grounding their technique and artistic sensibility with the fusion of modern dance principles. This creates dancers who are who are versatile, self-disciplined, self-confident and challenges them to move beyond their own preconceived ideas of what ballet has been.

Dance Conditioning

Developed especially to strengthen dancers bodies, prevent injuries, this unique class will enhance the dancers ability to move safely and provide greater muscle control, core strength and range of motion.

Improvisation

Dancers will explore exercises designed to generate new and innovative movement choices. Get ready to move, surprise yourself, break familiar movement patterns and be inspired. Partnering, contact improvisation, voice work and site specific improvisation will also be explored.

Performance Companies

VSC Dance is home to three Performing Repertory Companies. Acceptance into the companies is by invitation or audition. All companies work with a variety of renowned guest choreographers and VSC Dance faculty throughout the year. Guest choreographers have included Shay Kuebler, Ron Stewart Clinton Draper, Josh Beamish & Robert Halley and Resident choreographer Jung-Ah Chung. While the focus of these companies is on repertoire and performance opportunities, all members will also participate in dance for camera projects, dance history seminars, performance laboratories, dance funding, grant writing seminars, and more. Company members will also be encouraged to create their own work for KINECT our annual student choreographic performance. The Companies have their own show every year at the lovely Metro Theatre.

Adult Programs

Adult Modern/Contemporary

These classes focus on wholesome body imagery, good alignment and artistic expression. They encourage freedom of movement, and overall body awareness. All classes include a general warm-up, release work, core conditioning, technique, movement combinations and choreography. A great way to stay in shape and express yourself at the same time. Classes for beginners to advanced dancers. Come prepared to sweat, laugh, and experience the joy and delight of being in your body!

Conditioning

Whether you are a seasoned dancer or just looking for an effective way to condition your entire body this is an ideal class for you. It fuses together fitness and dance-based techniques to create an hour-long class focused on core strength, flexibility and endurance. This is a guaranteed effective way to lengthen muscles and increase overall flexibility and range of motion in the joints, strengthen your entire body and improve your overall endurance! Come give it a try. All levels welcome.

Improvisation Tuesdays

Movers will explore exercises designed to generate new and innovative movement choices. Get ready to move, surprise yourself, break familiar movement patterns and be inspired. Drop-in or sign up for the full year.

Contemporary Ballet

These classes are designed for dancers who are looking for something different than the traditional ballet class. Each class will include barre, centre practice and across the floor that is infused with modern. If you are looking to find your grace and be a bit innovation then this is the class for you.

Professional Classes

VSC Dance is pleased to offer two weekly day contemporary technique classes for the past 2 seasons. These classes are also open to pre-professionals and dancers at an advanced level in their training. There is a discounted rate for working professionals. These classes are lead by dance professionals in the community and guests from out of town, province and country.

Dance For The Camera

For Dancers, Videographers and Choreographers, this programme offers a new way to see, stimulate, device and engage with movement, as it exists in the frame. Learn how to compose new vocabulary specific to the frame and explore scale, time, the moving camera vs. the still camera, location and more. Participants need their own camera.

Kinect-Student Choreographic Lab & Performances

We are all inspired, creative beings – and given support, opportunity and tools, we are all innovators. Kinect is VSC Dance’s annual student choreographic showcase. Working with mentors from our Faculty, students are given the opportunity to create their own pieces and to have that work performed. Kinect generates unforgettable dance that celebrates creative process, performance, and the art of making dance.
